Is Tenants Insurance Necessary?

When it comes to insurance, whether it’s car insurance or other kinds of insurance, sometimes we begin to question whether or not it is necessary.  At the time, it seems like just another expense, and it isn’t until bad things happen that we are either glad that we have insurance, or we are left wishing that we had insurance.  Whatever the case, it is the same way with tenants insurance.  Since being a tenant in someone else’s property brings up some odd insurance questions, I am going to help you to answer the questions you have about tenants insurance.

Tenant insurance, otherwise known as renters insurance, is something that insures your stuff when you’re renting a house or a room from someone.  When the landlord pays for his insurance policy, they are usually only paying for the actual structure of the house or the building, and not for anything inside of it (since it isn’t their stuff).  Since the stuff inside is yours, it is your responsibility to get insurance on the stuff you want to have insured.  But, the nice thing about tenants insurance is that you don’t have to pay extra to insure the actual structure, since that is already being taken care of.

So, do you need renters insurance?  Well, that depends on your situation, but I would definitely advise you to get tenants insurance.  Some landlords do require it, but other landlords leave the option up to you.  Even if you have a bunch of used stuff in your place, you’re still going to have to pay to replace it with there is any damage or destruction, and that can get expensive, even if it’s replacing used stuff.  So, while it is definitely not mandatory, I would definitely suggest that you get some insurance to protect yourself if you are a tenant.
